The thing worth checking first in this section is whether a comparison still has two independent sides. Twice now it has turned out not to. The standalone SafeAuto product is not being sold; and The General and Dairyland both publish, in their own small print, that their coverages are underwritten by members of the same group — in Texas, The General names as its underwriter a company that appears on Dairyland's own published list. Two quotes from one underwriting group are one data point wearing two coats, and a comparison page that does not say so is selling a contest that is not happening.
These comparisons carry no premium figures, for the reason set out in each one: nobody publishes a rate that applies to your record, and an undated average for somebody else's driver profile is not a starting estimate — it only looks like one. What they compare instead is the terms each company publishes about its own filing: who underwrites, whether the filing fee recurs, and what each one will confirm in writing.
